This practice-based philosophical study presents the view that professional healthcare is not just one of the many paid professions. On the contrary, healthcare should be redefined as a modest but meaningful variant of enacted love for one’s fellow human beings, practiced in an institutional context. There is a reciprocal side to it, as it is not just professionals who show loving care for their patients, residents, or clients. Those groups have feelings of gratitude, respect and affinity for the professionals, although not all of them are equally satisfied. Obviously, love should be understood in a non-romantic and non-erotic way, and its location is not the private sphere. Professional Loving Care is the condensed and updated version of Menslievende zorg, originally written within the context of the Low Countries, but dealing with issues that are relevant to western healthcare systems in general. The Dutch edition was published in 2005 and by 2011 it was in its sixth reprint. Many professionals and patients stated that the book helped rethinking both the practice and the basis of professional healthcare in late modern society.

Sinds de jaren 50 zit de bioëthiek in de lift, in een stroomversnelling. In heel de westerse wereld ontstonden biomedische instituten, congressen volgden elkaar snel op. Nieuwe tijdschriften zagen het licht; ethische commissies op lokaal, regionaal en nationaal vlak werden opgericht. In de stroom van publicaties ontbraken kerkelijke documenten niet. Sinds paus Pius XII heeft de kerkelijke overheid in toenemende mate haar stem laten horen. Rome heeft gesproken; inderdaad. Dit boek inventariseert het kerkelijk spreken in verband met bioëthiek. Een synthese over de rooms katholieke standpunten was niet voorhanden. Dit boek voorziet bijgevolg in een leegte. Maar het gaat om meer. Moet de kerk wel spreken? Bestaat er zoiets als een christelijke/kerkelijke bioëthiek? Wat kan het aandeel van de kerken zijn in het actuele biomedische debat? Ook op deze vragen wordt in deze publicatie grondig ingegaan.Dit boek richt zich tot al wie de kerkelijke standpunten in deze materie beter wil leren kennen.

Americans now face a caring deficit: there are simply too many demands on people's time for us to care adequately for our children, elderly people, and ourselves. At the same time, political involvement in the United States is at an all-time low, and although political life should help us to care better, people see caring as unsupported by public life and deem the concerns of politics as remote from their lives. Caring Democracy argues that we need to rethink American democracy, as well as our fundamental values and commitments, from a caring perspective. The idea that production and economic life are the most important political and human concerns ignores the reality that caring, for ourselves and others, should be the highest value that shapes how we view the economy, politics, and institutions such as schools and the family. Care is at the center of our human lives, but Tronto argues it is currently too far removed from the concerns of politics. Caring Democracy traces the reasons for this disconnection and argues for the need to make care, not economics, the central concern of democratic political life.
